aussie table tennis

Aussie Table Tennis William Henzell tenergy 05

I will be writing here a very indepth review of my match against William Henzell on the 15th of May 2010 at the Brisbane Table Tennis Association at the Brisbane open.  Iin short,  in Australia the man that represents Aussie table tennis the best is the Aussie William Henzell.  He is an amazing table tennis player.  It doesn't matter what table tennis equipment William Henzell uses, he will still be the best Aussie table tennis player.  To quote my good mate, Ping Pong Rob from Mytabletennis.net (my favourite forum) "He could beat you with his shoe."

William Henzell equipment

William Henzell's table tennis blade is made by Yasaka from what I saw (but I heard that may be a Butterfly Timo Boll Spirit with the handle changed.)  William Henzell rubbers are Butterfly Tenergy 05 forehand and Butterfly Tenergy 05 backhand.
William Henzell is very secretive about which table tennis equipment he uses because he promotes aussietabletennis the table tennis company.  William Henzell does not use Xiom Vega Pro as he recently claimed on the Aussie table tennis website.  It is merely marketing.  Xiom Vega pro is still a good table tennis product, but it just goes to show that the professionals will refuse to use Xiom Vega Pro even when it is free.  Table Tennis professionals would rather pay to use the best quality product on the table tennis market.

William Henzell and the Table Tennis Ranking system used in Australia.

In Australia we use ratingscentral.com for our rating system.  On this system at the date of the match, his ranking was about 2850 and mine was about 1650.  That is about 1200 points of difference.  You can get a good idea of our table tennis levels of ranking from this.  My average game score against him was 3:11.  He appeared to play as good as he could against every player on the day.  I estimate my ability to be about a third of his and think the whole rankings and ratings reflect this perfectly.

You both played close the the table

At the end of BH warm up you can see Henzell trying to get extra spin by rolling his wrist over the ball to take advantage of extra contact or dwell time.
I noticed that Henzell's serves were just a little faster but more importantly Henzell would try to attack many of Boz's serves with top spin from just his wrist when the ball is over the table. Boz just pushes the Henzell's serves back without as much speed or spin. Just look at the difference in wrist motion between the two players.

William Henzell serves and flicks

His serves were 99% slow, very short, curvy sometimes more back or more top mixed with tons of sidespin positioned to awkward spots all the time.
I wanted to open it up but there was just either to hard to open or when I did his counter especially his backhand side was so ridiculously fast and spinny and well placed.

Nice job, Boz!

You played well against Henzell, imo. He dominated in the areas you would expect a player of his level to. and you did well when you managed to get him to play "honest" for your abilities. You did as well against Henzell as I do against state level players here in the States. Kudos Boz, you rock! Thanks for sharing.

Just some tips. You seem to

Just some tips. You seem to be reaching for the ball at some points meaning that you need to work on your foot work and ultimately improving your conditioning/finesse. Bend your knees more as it will help with your stance and positioning, otherwise moving will be more of a chore. Your returns are waaaay too high and you seem to pop it up giving him the perfect opportunity to attack. Also watch the ball as I see you miss quite a few shots. There's this weird thing you do at 3:08 that's just an example of how out of position you are. You're also blocking easy high shots that you should attack and take advantage of. That's how you lost that game at 3:30. Your backhand opening loop is good but your serves aren't very spinny and are sorta high and slow... Hope you take my criticism constructively. Cheers!

still chuckling

i think boz would benefit from hearing readers feedback about his playing style and we are fortunate to see australias best play one of qld's best so we all know how far we are behind these guys. im having a bit of a giggle as this is like comparing me to boz lol. sometimes you think you are playing bad but your opponent is actually controlling how well you can play through his style of play and with someone as good as henzell i can only imagine how hard it would be to win a point. hanks for sharing boz...cant wait to have a look at the video points though!
ok had a look at those points...to funny although we would probably all do that and more often i imagine against crap players let alone stars!
its so easy to look like an amateur against a international player in any sport...your lucky to have had the opportunity to even play him boz i reckon

Jordan Romero could climb Everest you could beat anyone!

Boz you can do anything just as Jordan Romero is the youngest person (only 13 years old) to climb the biggest mountain in the world. Your dreams have come true. In a conversation before leaving for Tibet, Jordan Romero explained that his aim was to motivate other youth to practice sports and avoid being overweight. “I also make this a little for me to do something big.” In Everest he underwent a special training plan. “I am still exercising, concentrating and doing resistance training,” said the young mountaineer, who has been asleep for a month in a tent that simulates high altitude to prepare his lungs for the next "impossible adventure. Jordan loves “adrenaline". Keep fighting

Australian table tennis player

He is the best Australian table tennis player we have had possibly ever. Funny how he is still far from the best Chinese players.
