Looping Heavy Underspin with Tenergy

Interesting web site. Just discovered it. I am a mid 1900's player and have used Tenergy 05 and then 64 for a couple years now (same on both sides). I like, need and want the built-in speed glue effect but sometimes find Tenergy a bit "hard" (all versions) and difficult to slow-loop with or loop with in general (against underspin that is) w/o much force behind the ball. Topspin looping and re-looping is all good but heavy chops/pushes are often difficult to lift b/c of the sponge hardness and the fact that the ball leaves the paddle quickly with short dwell time, etc.

These 2 Butterfly Tenergy series rubbers are at the polar extremes (until the FX versions come out).  In this review I intend to focus only on the differences of playing with both these rubbers from my own experience of using them and playing against them.  A review without considering what others say about the rubbers.

Is tenergy good for backhand?

Is any rubber good for your backhand, depends on your ability.  If your backhand is active, you loop with it, you can receive serves well enough, then this is nothing wrong at all with using Tenergy on your backhand.
Tenergy 25 however, is probably not the best choice for the great majority of players.  The backhand tends to require something, softer and lighter because the stroke is less powerful.  Heavier and harder rubbers are made to be penetrated into, and something like tenergy 25 requires a good swing to get the most out of it.

Is Butterfly Tenergy rubber soft?

Butterfly Table Tennis Tenergy rubbers are not hard nor soft.  The Tenergy series is medium to medium hard feeling rubbers.  The feeling goes from t25 harder, t05 in the middle and t64 feels the softest.  When FX comes out it will be the softest.

weight of tenergy rubber

The weight of Butterfly Tenergy rubbers

Most people say the weight of the tenergy rubber is the one of the biggest trade offs for using such consistantly playing table tennis equipment.
The weight and density of the medium hard sponge is the same for tenergy 05, tenergy 64 and tenergy 25. The surface of thickness and compostition is exactly the same for all the Tenergy rubbers also.  So the only difference between the Butterfly tenergy series is the pip width and spacing.

Tenergy 25 flick

Tenergy 25 is the best Butterfly Tenergy series rubber for forehand flicking

When do we use a forehand flick?

  • When we want to attack short balls which are going to bounce twice on our side of the net Tenergy 25 is excellent at flipping the ball.  No matter which kind of spin the serves have on them, if they are short (and you don't want to push a heavy backspin) Tenergy 25 has the greatest ease at giving this more offensive stroke because of the pip shape.
